It is not that Bengali’s are high intelligent beings while the rest of Indians are stupid creatures. It is just the common perception of the people given the massive accomplishment of Bengali people. I will try to reason as to why this is. Anyone can feel free to rectify me or add some valuable points on his/her part.
Bengal has always had a vibrant culture. Bengali’s have the passion for the creative arts. Dance,music,drama,literature,fine arts. Most renowned Indian singers have been Bengalis. One of the greatest directors the world has ever seen Satyajit Ray was bengali. Bengali films have frequently won National film awards. The Academy of Fine Arts is a unique one-of-its-kind institution which forms the cultural HQ of Bengal. This is because Bengali’s are encouraged to take up cultural co-curricular activities from a very young age.
Bengali’s have also contributed to Science. Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose was a pioneer in radio and wave optics. Not many people know this but he was simultaneously working alongside Marconi on a radio system. Satyendra Nath Bose who is best known for his work on quantum physics and providing the foundations for the Bose-Einstein statistics which deals with the Bose-Einstein Condenstate (the fifth state of matter). The word Boson which follow the Bose-Einstein statistics have been named after him.
There have been two Nobel Laureates from Bengal. The former the Bard himself. The great Rabindra Nath Tagore. Writer of several extra-ordinary novels. His understanding of the human soul and human relationships was second to none. And it was these great traits that made him become Asia’s First Nobel Laureate. The latter is Amartya Sen. One of the greatest economists of all-time . An alumnus of the prestigious Presidency University and later Trinity College,Cambridge, his contributions to welfare economics and social choice theory have been quite significant. He is also the recipient of Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civillian award.
So I guess it is this history and culture that makes people think that Bengali’s are so intelligent and cultured.
